Ski Sock Foot Protection Needs Assessment
Foot protection is especially important when skiing. Choosing the right protection for your feet requires careful consideration of:
- Skill level
- Boot type
- Boot fit
At THORLO, we’ve taken all these elements into consideration in designing our five different ski padded sock styles. Why such an extensive line? Basically because the foot is critical in snow sports…it's the "rudder,” and there are a wide variety of skiers looking to get different things out of the sport.
“I like a really thin ski sock that won't bunch up and is easy to get in a boot. These do all that and are warm as well. I now have three pair of these. Have tried TEKO, SmartWool, Spyder socks in the past. Not nearly as good as these.” Scott T.
“I'm certain that when I go to heaven and get to walk on the clouds this is what it is going to feel like. Without a doubt the BEST ski socks I have ever owned. They keep my feet dry, warm, and comfortable the entire day. If you don't own these socks yet, you should.” Trish M.
Thorlos SKX clinically-tested padded ski socks are best for beginners and infrequent skiers who are very likely to be wearing rental boots and need more protection. The SKX has clinically-tested engineered padding in the ball and heel for shear protection and in the shin to protect against shin bite. Together these provide maximum protection for optimum warmth and comfort on easy-to-varied terrain.

“I have worn Thorlo socks since 1991 and had my first pair for over 10 years before they wore out. My feet are never cold and the warmth is maintained for hours on end -- all day long! The SKX socks not only keep my feet warm, my feet do not slide in the boot. You have had a life-long customer since 1991. Well worth the money.” Susan D.
“These socks were great. I usually get cold feet after a few hours of skiing but these kept me toasty all day. The front padding on the shins is awesome. They also fit perfect around the arch so getting my boots on and off without any bunching was really appreciated.” Cheryl L.
For more experienced skiers, Thorlos makes three performance-level padded ski socks: SL, SLW and XSKI. These have been designed for the skier who has invested in custom-fitted boots for varied-to-difficult terrain and who needs less protection. These three styles have lower-profile padding in the ball, heel and shin to protect these areas from shear and pressure forces.
The SLW features a merino wool/silk blend (64%) for extra warmth and comfort.
All three styles are also suitable for cross country, telemark and ski touring.
“I have had one pair of the Thorlo Ski Socks Thin Cushion for several years and was ecstatic to find them online last month! These are the perfect weight socks for me. I love the "knee-high" length and it STAYS UP all day---no sagging, even after several years. These socks are thin enough to wear with almost anything but they are still warm enough for even the coldest days! I highly recommend them---they're worth every penny!” Gail M.
Technically Advanced Custom-Fitted Boot: Custom Fit
For elite competition skiers, Thorlos makes the S1TOU padded ski sock. It features special flat-knit protection for the skier who wants a padded sock that provides a ‘glove-like’ fit. It’s designed for those who wear technically advanced custom-fitted boots for competition skiing on difficult-to-challenging terrain and do not want any padding/protection in their ski sock.
“These are the best ultra light ski socks made. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a ski sock that gives an incredible connection between foot and boot.” John K.
“My niece is a J2 ski racer. She asked me to order 4 pairs of Thorlo High Performance Ski Socks - Ultra Thin Cushion for her to use with her new custom ski boot. I put in the order that evening on the Thorlo web site. I did not expect the order to arrive for 10 to 14 business days. Surprisingly, the order arrived on my door step in 4 business days. My niece gave a pair for me to try that following weekend. I was amazed that these thin socks could be so warm and comfortable. I love them so much I ordered another 8 pairs for her and me. Great job Thorlos!!!” Peter M.
Feet Stay Warm with THORLON/THORWICK Environmentally-Friendly Yarn
Regardless of your expertise, on the slopes, a dry foot is a warm foot. Thorlos SKX, SL, XSKI and S1TOU are made with a blend of THORLON and THORWICK yarn that wicks moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry and warm.
“These socks kept my feet warm and protected my shins from boot pressure.” Melonia A.
THORWICK yarn is made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. It offers environmental benefits including reduced waste sent to landfills as well as reduced energy and carbon dioxide emissions during production. So wearing these styles is not only good for your feet, it’s good for the environment.
30-Day No-Risk Brand Promise
If you don’t agree that with Thorlos clinically-tested padded ski socks your feet feel better than when wearing regular ski socks, we’ll refund your money.
“The SKX is Thorlos most protective ski product, especially for a rental boot. The extra padding provides comfort and the product also wicks moisture, keeping my foot drier and warmer. If my feet hurt or are uncomfortable when I ski, it can ruin my day and take away all the fun.”Kathy Neill, Director Retail Sales Operations

I have purchased these same socks for years. They have changed something they don’t stay up like they used to. Very bummed.

I love the socks that Thorlos makes so much that I sought them out. After years of having one pair, **which thankfully had the brand name stitched into the top,** I was able to purchase another pair. I hope to someday buy enough for each day of the week so that I can wear them all the time! Thank you guys for making such excellent products!!

So sad to write a bad review on the SL-11, because I have worn this sock for 20 years, every day, doing AG chores, mostly under Western boots and Muck boots. The old gray colored SL-11 was absolutely awesome, but now they have changed this sock. It is over three inches longer than the old gray ones, and it is much tighter in fit. I returned them and Thorlos was absolutely wonderful about the customer service. I am going to try the Western Boot sock before I give up.

My feet are really comfortable in these socks. I wear them pretty much every day to work in a pair of expensive Crispi hiking boots. It's great that they're tall and the tops don't generally disappear down into my boots. However, after only a week of wear, the elastic on the top of the sock is already getting loose. So I still find myself having to yank them up every half an hour. The front padding on these is great though - although designed for a snowboard/ski boot, the padding feels great in my hikers.

Purchased the blue ones (2x) for fishing on the Big Hole, Jefferson, Madison, and Missouri rivers and they are great. This is my second order for the thick cushion ones. My last purchase was suppose to be 3 SKX thick cushions but only received 1 thick and 2 thin ones. The thin ones are not very good for what I use them for, the water has to be below 70 degrees for trout fishing and I would also think that they would not be good for skiing as advertised.
