Reduce Blisters with Thorlos® CTPS Padded

How Thorlos Help

Thorlos address the two issues – excessive moisture and friction (shear forces) - that are the primary cause of foot blisters. Moisture retained by regular socks inside the shoe softens the skin of the foot, making it more vulnerable to blistering. The densely packed terry loops in Thorlos padding act as a buffer that significantly reduces the friction that can occur during long runs, walks and hikes. Thorlos clinically-tested padded socks’ (CTPS) exclusive variable-density terry padding (anatomically designed to place more padding under the toes and in the ball and heel areas of the foot and less padding in the arch area) protects the outer skin from pressure and shear forces, and wicks moisture away from the skin to reduce blistering, callus formation and the potential for moisture-related skin damage (see below for an explanation of how blisters are formed).

Thorlos engineered padding has been clinically shown to reduce blisters and the moisture that contributes to blister formation. It’s also been shown to reduce foot pain and pressures.

Thorlos CTPS padding reduces blisters

Moisture on the feet makes them extremely vulnerable to blistering. Thorlos are made primarily with a proprietary THOR•LON® acrylic yarn and blends of this yarn because of its excellent moisture-management properties. The padding pulls the moisture away from the skin. By contrast, natural fibers (cotton, wool and silk) absorb moisture; they do not provide the wicking action that helps control moisture inside the footwear. Moisture also causes natural fibers such as cotton and wool to collapse and lose their protective characteristics, setting the stage for blister formation and other moisture-related foot conditions.

The bottom line: Thorlos padding provides a dynamic layer of protection between the shoe and the foot. It absorbs the detrimental effects of friction/shear. If blister damage has already occurred, Thorlos clinically-tested padding will minimize foot pressures and friction/shear at the blister location.

How Blisters are Formed

Blisters are often the result of an injury to the skin from friction, such as shoes that rub.

As friction increases, the skin begins to break down and separate into layers. Increased moisture contributes to increased friction, thereby increasing the chance of blister formation. Blisters can expand in width and depth really quickly. If the damage to the layers goes deep enough, penetrating the areas where blood vessels reside, blood blisters result as the blood vessels are broken and blood infiltrates the spaces between the separating layers.

The Role of Proper Fitting in Blister Prevention

It is critical to get properly fitted for footwear. Ill-fitting socks and shoes are one of the primary causes of blisters in sports activities and even in everyday situations. You should also take care to purchase shoes that are designed and fitted securely (so they do not chafe or rub the feet), and that have few interior seams and raised areas to irritate the feet. See our fitting process and video for help in getting a great fit.
