What Causes Black Toe?
Black toe is a relatively common condition, especially for runners and exercise walkers. Most often it is the result of impact trauma, especially in the big toe. Repetitive impact and pressure (or banging) produces bleeding and bruising of the nail, causing it to become discolored (often blue and then black). People who walk and run on hard surfaces such as concrete and asphalt are more likely to incur black toe than those who exercise on natural surfaces or softer man-made surfaces. Hikers can experience black toe as a result of the toes banging against the front area of their shoes or boots, especially on downhill sections of trails. People who have the second toe longer than the big toe (a phenomenon called “Morton’s toe”) may see black toe appear in the second toe instead of, or in addition to, the big toe.
Black toe can also be the result of a fungal infection, and less frequently, it can be caused by a subungual (occurring under the toenail) melanoma.

Proper Fitting & Toenail Care are Critical
Black toe is usually a sign that your shoes are too short, or that they fit too tightly and do not allow sufficient room for the feet to move dynamically during walking and running. Proper fit is absolutely essential for preventing this toenail trauma. Assure your shoes or boots have sufficient cushioning and room in the toe box so that excessive pressure is not exerted on the forefoot and the toes and the toenails are not forced/crowded too close together. Proper fit helps assure that there is sufficient room between the longest toe and the end of the shoe (about the width of a thumb nail is the recommended space). For Thorlos protective padding to work properly, we strongly advise you have your footwear fitted with a new pair of Thorlos. We also recommend that you should read our self-fit instructions or watch our fitting video.
Another way to eliminate black toe is to ensure your toenails are properly trimmed. Toenails should be cut straight across, should not be cut too short, and sharp edges can be lightly refined with an emery board or clean metal file. See IPFH.org for more information on toenail care.
