Morton's NeuromaA neruoma is a benign enlargement of a nerve segment that can occur in various areas of the body. A Morton's neuroma typically occurs between the third and fourth toes, just below their bases (between the third and fourth metatarsal bones). The enlargement of the nerve is usually the result of compression and irritation. Neuromas are characterized by tingling, burning, numbness and shooting pain. This pain generally occurs gradually, but gets worse over time. Neuromas can occur in other locations in the foot, but the Morton’s neuroma between the third and fourth toes (and sometimes between the second and third toes) is the most common.
