Athlete's FootAthlete's foot is a fungal infection of the skin that develops in the moist areas between the toes and in other areas of the foot. Also called tinea pedis, athlete's foot is closely related to other fungal infections with similar names that occur in other areas of the body. According to the 2009 National Foot Health Assessment conducted for the Institute for Preventive Foot Health by the NPD Group 28% of adults age 21 and older (59 million people) have experienced athlete’s foot. It is more common in men than in women, with 40% of men having experienced it, compared to only 17% of women. Common symptoms include itching, stinging and burning between the toes and/or on the soles of the feet, itchy blisters, cracking and peeling skin, especially between the toes and on the soles of the feet, and excessive dryness of the skin of the feet. The most common manifestation of athlete’s foot is interdigital (occurring between the toes). It also manifests in what is called a “moccasin” pattern (which involves thickening of the skin and a rash on the sole and heel of the foot), as well as in blisters that occur between the toes, on the sole and heel, and occasionally on the top of the foot. Athlete’s foot may also be accompanied by toenail fungus (onychomychosis), which can occur with or without the symptoms of athlete’s foot.
